View Funeral Webcast Margot Anne Astrachan passed away peacefully on Friday, April 18, 2025, at Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti, MO. She was born January 4, 1937, in Memphis, TN, to Dorothy (Kadushin) and Jack Klein. She was the beloved wife of Jack Astrachan for fifty-six years, and mother of Michael Astrachan. She had one brother, Dr. Marvin Klein, of Memphis. Margot left Memphis in 1953 to attend Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and drawing as well as art history. After graduation, she moved to New York City to study at the Art Students League of New York. In New York, she worked as a model and as a designer of ladies' handbags. Among her fond recollections from her time spent there was meeting leaders of the 1960s Pop art movement, Andy Warhol and James Rosenquist, and Abstract Expressionism artist Mark Rothko. At one point, she had a dream of opening a West Coast art gallery, but she fell in love along the way. After only three dates, a wonderful fellow from Kennett proposed and she married the love of her life, Jack Astrachan, on May 27, 1963. Margot gave private art lessons to hundreds of area students over a span of more than forty years and held several one-woman art shows. She loved her students and hoped to pass her wisdom down to each of them. She saw some of them go on and excel in the arts and some former students remained in touch with her through the years. A devoted, loving mother to Mike, Margot was a thoughtful friend to many. Active in her community, she served as president of the 20th Century Club and of the Kennett Ladies Golf Association and was a member of the Wednesday Music Club and PEO Chapter CY. She worked closely with her husband, mother-in-law Sonia (Kahn) Astrachan, and her brother-in-law Sol Astrachan, in the family business, James Kahn Department Store. There she was a model, window designer, and salesclerk. Among her other interests were knitting, collecting antique silver, cooking, music, needlepoint, bridge, reading and movies. Margot is survived by her son Michael and his wife, Sandee, of Nashville, TN. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents, her brother, and her mother-in-law and brother-in-law. Memorial can be made to the Jack Astrachan Fine Arts Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Dalton, Mowrer and Chidister, PO Box 529, Kennett, MO 63857, or to a charity of your choice. Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Chapel in Kennett followed by a graveside service at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
